Children are not little adults, and we need to understand these differences to ensure our teaching is the best it can be. From CPR to recognition of the sick child, our learners need to know why we do what we do, not just the how. What do we need to be teaching our learners to ensure our paediatric CPR classes leave them feeling empowered and confident to act in an emergency, and how do we feel confident in ourselves to teach the paediatric topics?

Alan will look at a small selection of cases, to try and give us a quick insight into what we should be thinking about.

Do our guidelines help keep us out of trouble?

The RLSSA has developed guidelines and we audit our businesses against those guidelines. Alan will look at the value of that work and how it might assist us should we be unlucky enough to have an incident.

  • Water Quality: New Draft Water Quality Guidelines for Public Aquatic Facilities in Queensland

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You must attend all of the Water Quality Stream to gain your Pool Plant Operators Certificate

The Queensland Health Swimming and Spa Pool Water Quality and Operational Guidelines were published in 2004 and are due for an update. There have been many improvements in our understanding of the technical and health aspects of swimming and spa pool management since 2004 and there has also been an expansion in the diversity of recreational water-based facilities. The new draft guidelines are not attempting to be a manual for how to manage these diverse facilities, but they will try to ‘set the bar’ for water quality in these facilities, and to reflect best practice in terms of managing the input of pollutants to facilities as well as treatment steps to remove these pollutants. Another key aspect of the presentation at the conference will be to provide an opportunity for pool professionals to discuss water quality issues of concern to them and for Queensland Health to get feedback on the water quality issues of most concern to aquatic facility managers in Queensland.

You answer questions, you take names and phone numbers but really don’t remember much about who you spoke to or what was said. The phone won’t stop ringing and your staff are walking around either in a stupor or sobbing.

One of the staff comes up to you and says that the inspector from Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is here and wants to speak to whoever is in charge. Are you ready?

  • Facility Management: How can we ensure staff are appropriately qualified?

Under the current work health and safety and public pool legislation, facility operators who operate multiple aquatic facilities in Australia are obligated to ensure they are providing a safe environment for patrons and staff members. This includes the provision of appropriately trained staff.
Facility operators have been put under pressure to tackle the challenges of skill shortage; attracting and retaining skilled workers while ensuring their practices are financially, socially and environmentally sustainable.
This session will discuss how YMCA NSW fulfils its obligation to ensuring its workforce is appropriately trained/qualified and its journey of implementing an essential qualification management system.

  • Water Quality: New Technology in Chlorination Systems for Large Pools and Aquatic Centres

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION

You must attend all of the Water Quality Stream to gain your Pool Plant Operators Certificate

As space becomes scarce in our ever more crowded cities, designers of new Aquatic facilities are looking to technology to provide more sophisticated means of delivering chlorine to pool water.

Chlorine gas and liquid chlorine have been widely used in large pools but, as regulation for the storage and handling of these is becoming more restrictive, pool operators are making use of new and improved design granular and tablet dry chlorine feeders in many cases.  Where a large Aquatic centre with multiple pools is designed, Consulting Engineers are also giving increased consideration to new technologies for chlorine generation – either in the pool water itself, or externally produced bulk on-site liquid chlorine, from salt.

The technology for chlorine generation has come a long way since plate electrolysers were first used in pool water.  German technology ‘membrane type’ electrolyser technology is now in it’s fourth generation and the latest systems are extremely compact, efficient and economical to run.  This paper discusses the technology of these new products and showcases some Australian and overseas applications in large Aquatic centres.
