This course covers essential information as well as practical and proven tips for applying for government jobs.

This format is run over two afternoons and as been broken into 3 modules, allowing participants to attend what is most important to them; either resume & applications, interview skills or all of the modules. 

By the end of the program, we hope you will be able to confidently handle each stage of the typical government recruitment process.

Day 1

The first day introduces essential knowledge in understanding the recruitment and selection process within the public sector and then focuses on developing a professional resume and writing high quality applications and supporting statements.

Module 1: Navigating Public Sector Recruitment and Selection

All participants must attend this session

The first session will set the foundations, helping you to navigate the public sector recruitment process from an applicant’s perspective, while learning how to identify your key ‘selling’ features to build a competitive advantage. You will gain insight into how to understand what a panel is looking for and how to put your best self forward. Topics include: 

  • Navigate public sector recruitment & selection – an applicant’s perspective
  • Understand & use competency frameworks

Module 2: Developing your Resume and Written Application

The second session on day one focuses on developing your professional resume, identifying and highlighting your strengths as well as writing great applications, responding to selection criteria or preparing other supporting statements.

Module 1 topics as well as:

  • Articulate your strengths including your transferable skills
  • Identify your key “selling” features and best evidence
  • Present your capabilities through a professional resume
  • Prepare high quality written supporting statements
  • Adapt to different application requirements – 1 or 2 page statements, response to merit criteria, expressions of interest
  • Appreciate what selection panels (and recruiters) look for at the shortlisting stage
  • Use your written application to set you up for success through the rest of the process

Day 2

The second day dives deep into interview preparation and will give you the skills and advanced techniques to impress the panel and perform at your best.

Module 3: Interview Skills Intensive

On day two, both sessions will focus on interview skills and strategies. You will learn how to prepare for your interview including anticipating different kinds of interview questions and knowing how to close an interview. You will learn techniques to help you manage your nerves while confidently “selling” yourself in the interview. We will include hints on handling on-line interviews. Our goal is help you maximise your success in interviews for government jobs. Topics include: 

  • Prepare well for recruitment interviews
  • Understand behavioural, scenario and other typical questions
  • Plan your responses but remain flexible
  • Prepare a memorable closing statement
  • Manage yourself in an interview – handle nerves & avoid typical applicant mistakes
  • Develop non-verbal communication strategies for success
  • Understand how to respond to complex interview situations integrating multiple selection techniques (work samples, work tests, psychometric assessment)
  • Gain key tips for success in remote interviews

By the end of the program, we hope you will be able to confidently handle each stage of the typical government recruitment process.
