Youth Refresher Mental Health First Aid

Introduction

Refresher courses are 4 hour face-to-face courses that allow people who have previously completed a 12 or 14 hour Mental Health First Aid course to refresh their knowledge and skills. For people who are Accredited MHFAiders, the refresher courses offer an opportunity to extend their accreditation for a further 3 years.

The content of each refresher course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

The Youth MHFA Refresher Course gives participants an opportunity to refresh the knowledge and skills learnt during the 14-hour Youth Mental Health First Aid Course. Participants gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field, learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal, work through complex mental health first aid interactions, and practice mental health first aid skills.

Content

The course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Course participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Developing mental health problems covered are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Eating disorders

Mental health crisis situations covered are:

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (sometimes called deliberate self-harm)

All MHFA Courses teach how to give mental health first aid using the MHFA Action Plan.

Instructor

Natalie Bottroff

Principal Master Instructor, Mental Health First Aid

Certificate IV in Workplace Training & Assessment
Graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling

PTSD, ACT and Trauma Informed Care trained

Progressive Goal Attainment Program trained

Natalie has successfully completed Mental Health First Aid training for over 1,100 police officers and senior public servants ranging from Sergeants and Chief Superintendents to Diversity and Inclusion Officers. Training has also been delivered across to more than 500+ individuals in government agencies and private organisations including child protection, manufacturing, local councils, insurance, mining, and not for profit organisations and amateur sporting associations.

Natalie’s passion for mental health drives her to advocate that a conversation amount mental health should be as simple as a conversation about a person’s physical health. To reduce stigma, takes acceptance that mental illness is a ‘health condition’ aligning to other overall health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, obesity and heart disease to name a few.

The desire to see better education in this sphere comes from her work as a consultant working with organisations that have persons with psychological injuries and illnesses from their employment, ranging from mild through to catastrophic, returning work injured employees to their usual occupation or new employment.

Natalie’s firm provides personal injury consulting in life insurance, workers compensation and early intervention for non-insurance claims, together with training in mental health and pain education.

Please note: This is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. Specific postvention support services can be found at beyondblue.
