  • Redistributing Power through Co-Design

    Presenter: Christian Duell

    Host: Matt Healey

In this session with co-design facilitator Christian Duell we will explore the role of co-design in redistributing power for more sustainable and equitable outcomes. Starting with a brief overview of co-design in the context of other design approaches, we’ll then work through an activity called the ‘Power & Passion Matrix’ to identify and troubleshoot who to recruit to participate in co-design sessions and when. Christian’s extensive co-design experience is informed by years of work in the public purpose sector working with organisations like headspace and UNICEF Australia as well as state and local governments.

  • Designers and evaluators working together for scale.

Presenters: Chris Vanstone and Jess Dart

    Host: Shani Rajendra

Everyone wants to see their innovations scaled, but how does this really happen? And what does scaling mean anyway? How can you scale out your social innovation to other contexts but still retain what makes your program or project effective and distinctive? In this session we will explore different types and approaches to scaling and the challenges faced and how designers and evaluators can work together to support readiness for scale.

In this session we will invite participants to consider what type of scaling approaches might suit their organisations as well as engaging with a real case study of an Australian social innovation that has been scaled.

  • Using systems practices to inform intervention design and evaluation

    Presenter: Matt Healey

    Host: SIG Member (TBC)

    Structure:

    • Intro to systems thinking and mapping
    • Approaches to mapping
    • Exercise: mapping relationships

As evaluators and designers, understanding the relationships within networks and associated power dynamics is a complex path to walk. We are asked to address questions that can have real implications for the connections that exist in the ‘real world’. So, how might we understand these relationships to inform the sorts of actions we take?

This session will provide a brief overview of some basic systems thinking concepts and approaches. Given the Learning Sprint theme, we will be focusing on the idea of how we, as individuals attending the session, are connected and what this might mean in terms of planning interventions. To do this a survey will be distributed prior to the session.

We will, in turn, use this information to explore how these relationships as understood through a systems lens might inform possible actions we take. In small groups, you will have a chance to explore these insights with some time for Q&A at the end.
