South Island Spectacular

Day 1 Thursday, April 20: AUCKLAND to DUNEDIN (air)

We fly direct to Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the South. Coach transfers to the city. Lunch own arrangements at Dunedin before check-in after 2pm. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight Scenic Southern Cross Hotel.

Day 2 Friday, April 21: DUNEDIN to QUEENSTOWN (train and coach)

After breakfast, we transfer by coach to Dunedin Station and board the Taieri Gorge tourist train. We travel through the spectacular Taieri Gorge to the Central Otago plateau where we board our coaches for our onward run to Queenstown and a two-night stay. Lunch own arrangements at Middlemarch. Overnight Copthorne Queenstown Hotel, Queenstown.

Day 3 Saturday, April 22: At QUEENSTOWN

Day at leisure in this celebrated alpine town on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Join our cruise on the lake steamer Earnslaw for our barbecue lunch at Walter Peak station (included). Overnight Copthorne Queenstown Hotel.

Day 4 Sunday, April 23: QUEENSTOWN to TE ANAU (coach)

After a leisurely departure, we visit the historic hamlet of Arrowtown before setting out for an afternoon drive to our overnight stay at Te Anau. Lunch own arrangements at Arrowtown. Overnight Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Villas, Lake Te Anau.

Day 5 Monday, April 24: FIORDLAND CRUISES

We have two exciting luncheon cruises operating today which are included in your tariff. Before we leave Auckland, we’ll be asking you to choose your cruise - either Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound. Coach transfers from our hotel. Overnight at Distinction Te Anau Hotel and Villas.

Day 6 Tuesday, April 25: TE ANAU to INVERCARGILL (coach)

After breakfast, we leave Fiordland and head for Invercargill via rich Southland farming country and a two-night stay. Lunch own arrangements. Overnight at Kelvin Hotel and Ascot Park Hotel.

Day 7 Wednesday, April 26: STEWART ISLAND (ferry)

We have space reserved on the morning sailing to Stewart Island. This tour is weather-dependent. Lunch own arrangements at Oban. Overnight at Kelvin Hotel and Ascot Park. Transfers to and from the Bluff ferry terminal by coach.

Day 8 Thursday, April 27: INVERCARGILL to DUNEDIN (train)

Transfers from our hotels by coach to the station for a mid-morning departure on the Dunedin Railways Silver Fern railcar. Overnight at Scenic southern Cross Hotel.

Day 9 Friday, April 28: At DUNEDIN

Day at leisure in this historic university city. Tours of historic Olveston House and of the city’s environs will leave the hotel mid-morning (included). Tours to Otago Peninsula leave from the hotel in early afternoon; a range of tours is available (optional extra, price advised closer). Lunch own arrangements.

Day 10 Saturday, April 29: DUNEDIN to ASHBURTON (train)

We transfer by coach to Dunedin Station to board our Silver Fern railcar for the trip north to Canterbury. A stop in Oamaru for a leg stretch and lunch. We transfer by coach to nearby Glenavy and rejoin our railcar for the run through to Ashburton. Overnight at Hotel Ashburton and Bella Vista motel.

Day 11 Sunday, April 30: ASHBURTON to GREYMOUTH (rail and coach)

After breakfast we travel north to Rolleston to join the Midland rail line to the West Coast. Thanks to new safety regulations, our railcar has to run empty through the Otira Tunnel while we have to travel from Arthurs Pass to Otira by coach. Spectacular mountain pass views. Overnight Ashley Hotel and Recreational Hotel

Today we travel by coach to Westport via the rugged Buller Gorge. Everyone will see the impressive coast, including the blow holes at Punakaiki, and the coastal road back to Greymouth. Lunch own arrangements at Westport. Overnight at Ashley Hotel and Recreational Hotel.

Day 13 Tuesday, May 2: GREYMOUTH to CHRISTCHURCH (train)

We leave Greymouth mid-morning in our Silver Fern railcar and our last day on the South Island rail system. Again, we will need to transfer our party to our coaches for the run across Arthurs Pass while our railcar negotiates the Otira Tunnel. Transfers by coach to hotel. Overnight at Sudima Airport Hotel, at Christchurch.

Day 14 Wednesday, May 3: CHRISTCHURCH to AUCKLAND (air)

After breakfast at our hotel, we transfer to Christchurch Airport for our return flights to Auckland.
