The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) provides funding to the VET Development Centre (VDC), to deliver workforce development training to improve the knowledge, skills and practice of VET teachers, trainers and assessors, and strengthen the learning environment, experience and outcomes for all VET learners. The Skills First Professional Knowledge Series of workshops will draw on educational theory and VET policy to promote reflective practice and build advanced training and assessment skills.

Workshop 1: Teaching, learning and assessment theory and practice 
(21 May or 28 May or 11 June)

Areas of focus:

  • Understand the impact of teaching and assessment on learning
  • Understand how learner diversity impacts learning
  • Understand teaching design principles and strategies on student learning
  • Understand assessment purposes, principles and processes

Workshop 2: Content, context and how it can be taught 
(29 May or 5 June or 17 June)

Areas of focus:

  • Understand implications of industry context for program design
  • What makes good and bad units/qualifications and how to have input into Training Package development
  • Understand the requirements of learning program/s
  • Building sustainable partnerships with industry

Workshop 3: Understand learners, their contexts and how they learn
(31 May or 14 June or 20 June)

Areas of focus:

  • Understand how learners progress in their learning
  • Understands and values learners’ social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds to support learner participation
  • Understands the demands of different learning contexts
  • Understand a variety of effective strategies to support learners to learn

Category:

Intermediate (Build on your existing Knowledge)
Professional learning aimed at practitioners that have specialised theoretical knowledge and practical experience of training and assessment. They employ a wide range of teaching and assessment methods and provide guidance and support to practitioners. 

Audience:

The workshops are only for VET teachers, trainers and assessors of Training Providers of Accredited Training with a Skills First contract. You can check your eligibility here.

Participants are encouraged to attend all three workshops or alternatively individual workshops, according to their requirements.

All workshops for this program will be held at the VET Development Centre, Level 8, 379 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.

Facilitator Team:

Karen Dymke has over 20 years' experience in the TAFE and ACFE sector as a teacher, trainer and presenter. She has spent the last number of years embedded in exploring the research that underpins these areas, referencing the meta analysis of Professor John Hattie. 

Carol Macreadie has 20 years' experience in the VET sector, initially as an ESL and Adult Literacy teacher. Carol has particular expertise in resources for learners with LLN needs, including WELL-funded resources. She is committed to the provision of LLN support to VET learners, including through the Foundation Skills Training Package. 

Cherylle Pell is an accomplished vocational education professional with over 20 years' experience in conducting internal audits of RTOs against regulatory standards and quality frameworks. She has also been involved in conducting official audits for regulatory authorities and management of Registered Training Organisation systems on behalf of clients. She is also an expert in curriculum development and accreditation.
