The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) provides funding to the VET Development Centre (VDC), to deliver workforce development training to improve the knowledge, skills and practice of VET teachers, trainers and assessors, and strengthen the learning environment, experience and outcomes for all VET learners. The Skills First Professional Practice Series of workshops will draw on educational theory and VET policy to promote reflective practice and build advanced training and assessment skills.

Workshop 1: Design effective teaching and learning experiences

(25 June)

Areas of focus:

  • Establish challenging learning goals
  • Ensure that learning programs and the learning environment are vocationally relevant
  • Select and organise content
  • Design challenging and inclusive teaching and learning activities
  • Develop teaching and learning resources to capitalise on learning environments. 

Workshop 2: Effective teaching and learning strategies to cater for a range of learning needs

(28 June)

Areas of focus:

  • Manage teaching and learning activities
  • Implement teaching and learning strategies to challenge and motivate individual learners
  • Use communication strategies that motivate and support learning and wellbeing.

Workshop 3: Assess for learning and monitor for learner progress

(16 July)

Areas of focus:

  • Design and apply activities/tasks to identify where the learner is at in terms of their learning
  • Monitor learner progress to identify targeted intervention
  • Provide feedback to learners to support progression

Workshop 4: Assess and report learner achievement

(23 July)

Areas of focus:

  • Determine the assessment purpose/s, evidence requirements and stakeholder reporting needs
  • Use of range of suitable assessment methods and tools consistent with regulatory standards and requirements
  • Conduct assessment to make valid and reliable assessment judgements
  • Record and report learner achievement
  • Evaluate and improve assessment.

Workshop 5: Evaluate impact of teaching on learning

(30 July)

Areas of focus:

  • Evaluate personal teaching and learning strategies to improve practice
  • Evaluate and improve teaching programs

Workshop 6: Create and maintain a safe and suportive environment that optimises learning

(14 August)

Areas of focus:

  • Manage challenging learner behaviour to promote positive learning experiences
  • Comply with legislation, codes of ethics and conduct established by regulatory authorities and organisations

Category:

Intermediate (Build on your existing Knowledge)
Professional learning aimed at practitioners that have specialised theoretical knowledge and practical experience of training and assessment. They employ a wide range of teaching and assessment methods and provide guidance and support to practitioners. 

Audience:

The workshops are only for VET teachers, trainers and assessors of Training Providers of Accredited Training with a Skills First contract. You can check your eligibility here.

Participants are encouraged to attend all three workshops or alternatively individual workshops, according to their requirements.

All workshops for this program will be held at the VET Development Centre, Level 8, 379 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.

Facilitator Team:

Karen Dymke has over 20 years' experience in the TAFE and ACFE sector as a teacher, trainer and presenter. She has spent the last number of years embedded in exploring the research that underpins these areas, referencing the meta analysis of Professor John Hattie. 

Therese Hickey is an independent Vocational Education and Training consultant. Her experience stems across various roles including quality and compliance manager, consultant, auditor and National Quality Council project officer. Therese has a keen interest in reinvigorating how the VET sector and industry approaches workforce capability and skill development. Therese works with the regulations, policy and research to empower participants with the tools and knowledge to cultivate and maintain a strong approach to meeting the VET Quality Framework.
