Responding to Disclosure in the Adult Learning Environment Workshop

The Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) aims to improve the learning environment, experience and outcomes for all learners in the vocational education and training (VET) sector. DET is funding a professional development program on family violence to strengthen the knowledge, skills and practice of VET teachers, trainers, and assessors to improve the learning environment, experience and outcomes for all VET learners.

The VDC and Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria (DVRCV) have developed two workshops focusing on:

  1. Family Violence and Risk Assessment; and
  2. Disclosure in the Adult learning environment.

Workshop 1 - Identifying Family Violence and Risk Assessment

(4 September or 18 September)

This full day workshop will cover the effects of family violence on adults and children, and provide an overview of legal responses, resources and referrals. The program will also explore ways of asking about violence and responding to disclosures.

Areas of focus:

  • Common beliefs about family violence
  • Definition, prevalence and impacts
  • Indicators of family violence
  • Asking questions and responding to disclosures
  • Intersectionality and safety
  • Preliminary risk assessment
  • Safety planning and referrals

Workshop 2 – Responding to Disclosure in the Adult Learning Environment

(11 September or 9 October)

This half day workshop will focus on educating VET practitioners on how to appropriately manage a learning environment and support learners who might be experiencing family violence.

Areas of focus:

  • Asking and responding to disclosures
  • Addressing perpetrators in the workplace
  • Intervention orders and the workplace
  • Intersectionality and safety
  • Self-care and wellbeing

Category:

Introductory (New to the topic): These sessions are aimed at practitioners that have a broad theoretical knowledge and practical experience of training and assessment. They operate independently and seek guidance when necessary.

Audience:

The workshops are for Victorian VET teachers, trainers and assessors of Training Providers of Accredited Training with a Skills First contract, Learn Local providers and ACFE funded providers. You can check your eligibility here.

All workshops for this program will be held at the VET Development Centre, Level 8, 379 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.

Facilitators: DVRCV

For over 30 years, the DVRCV has been providing resources to support victims/survivors of family violence, their family and friends and the professionals who support them. DVRCV trainers develop and deliver with specialist, direct family violence experience and practice wisdom and their programs cover a range of topics including working with children, family violence and the workplace, working with fathers and tech-facilitated abuse.
