VET NDIS Community of Practice

New accredited short courses in disability

8 October 2019 09:00 AM - 10:30 AM
VET Development Centre, Level 8 379 Collins Street Melbourne Victoria Australia 3000

Description:

Presented by Lisa Confoy - Senior Project Officer, Industry Initiatives Unit, Department of Education and Training.

As you know, the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has changed the way disability services are delivered. The Victorian government responded in October 2016 by releasing Keeping our Sector Strong: Victoria’s workforce plan for the NDIS (Plan), which outlines the strategy to address workforce needs for the NDIS.

One of the initiatives managed by DET under the Plan is a Review of Qualifications under the Community Service Training Package and Health Training Packages.

Four courses are being developed for Victorian Crown Accreditation which were identified in the review’s recommendations and validated by industry:

  1. Providing individual/core support for NDIS participants with a psychosocial disability
  2. Skilling support workers to provide personal care and community access for people with complex needs
  3. Cross-skilling for the existing ageing, allied health assistance and disability workforces
  4. Supporting Aboriginal people with disability - cultural competency for non-Aboriginal disability support workers who work with Aboriginal clients.

Each course will include three embedded units:

  1. Applying a human rights approach to the identification, prevention and reporting of abuse and/or grooming of people with disabilities
  2. Working effectively within an NDIS service context
  3. Identifying and providing initial response to family violence risk.

The courses are designed for upskilling the existing disability workforce, as well as the allied health or aged care workforces.

The short courses are currently in development and due for accreditation by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority in September 2019. DET is also funding the development of learning and assessment resources for the four short courses to facilitate high quality delivery by the training sector.

This session will give you an overview of the new courses and seek your input into the development of materials and delivery.

Who can attend?:

Victorian VET and Learn Local Organisation trainers and assessors, leaders, managers, curriculum managers and coordinators delivering NDIS related qualifications (Certificate III in Individual Support; Certificate IV in Disability; Certificate IV in Mental Health; Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work; Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance and Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance).
