Have Michael & Michelle nailed it? Watch our video….. They will be sharing their story with us at the Breakfast!

Michelle Gallaher

Director, The Social Science and Co-Chair, Women in Science Australia

Michelle Gallaher is a recognised leader in the Australian biotechnology industry, with over 25 years’ experience in the sector. In 2008 Michelle was appointed CEO of BioMelbourne Network, the peak body representing the $52 billion biotechnology sector in Victoria.

In 2013, Michelle started The Social Science, a social media marketing agency for the science and innovation industries, with her partner Michael Avery. Michelle wasn’t content with just one start-up; she established another within a few months of the first. Women in Science Australia was co-founded by Michelle and her colleague Dr Margurite Evans-Galea. The non-profit advocacy group champions women in leadership in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine), keeping women in STEM careers, and getting younger girls to choose STEM.

Michelle is a sought after speaker in Australia and overseas, appearing regularly at conferences and corporate events, not just for her knowledge in biotechnology, social media and the innovation sector, but as a vocal advocate for women in STEM.

Michelle is a TEDX alumni, non-executive director on a number of boards, and social media and mainstream media commentator on Australian innovation and women in leadership.

"If we don’t have equity in scientific leadership in Australia we are only using 50% of our talent."

Michael Avery

Director, The Social Science and President, St Michael’s Grammar School Parents and Friends Association

Michael Avery is a highly-qualified project manager and ICT change implementation professional who, for over 20 years, led major change programs for multinational companies in banking and finance, utilities, telecommunications, manufacturing and professional services.

After becoming a stepfather to two small children, Michael became a full- time CFO (Chief Family Officer), re-engineering his family’s home life to remove the ‘barriers’ for his partner, Michelle, to pursue her career.

Michael is a vocal advocate for equity and diversity in leadership and for families. He is one of a small handful of men who volunteer at his children’s school, St Michael’s Grammar, joining the committee of the Parents and Friends Association and then assuming the President role. Not surprisingly, the second hand uniform shop was the first beneficiary of his professional experience, upgraded to a new IT and processing system with training manuals and a help desk!

Ready for another change as the family grew and new business opportunities arose, his appetite for technology, change and social media coalesced with Michael and Michelle together establishing a social media marketing agency, The Social Science.

"Our children recognise the danger of role stereotypes and actively rally against them. We have some pretty intense dinner table conversations around equity and diversity in our house."
