Keynote:

Title: The Worry Paradox: The only way past worry is through it

There's a funny paradox about anxiety: the surest way to get rid of it is to stop trying to get rid of it. But when we feel nervous, we are catapulted into fight-or-flight, motivating us to escape what we perceive as dangerous. Similarly, when a child in our care is anxious, our impulse is to quickly erase their fear by providing reassurance and support. But the more we accommodate anxiety and attempt to reassure it away, the more it grows. The opposite tactic, withdrawing adult attention and support, feels unkind, and is seldom effective. So what's a parent, educator, or anxious person to do? Keynote speaker, psychologist and best-selling author Dr. Dawn Huebner suggests an approach to anxiety that flies in the face of intuition but is, in fact, supported by research and remarkably effective. Using anecdotes from her own life and 30-years of clinical practice, Dr. Huebner sheds light on the nature of worry and the do's and don'ts of effective management.

Workshop

Title: The Nuts and Bolts of Outsmarting Worry

Description: Each of us has an internal alarm system perfectly designed to alert us to danger and keep us safe. But the alarm gets triggered by the perception of danger, so sometimes we feel ourselves to be at risk when in fact we are not. Worry grows out of control when this over-zealous internal alarm, coupled with a handful of misconceptions, leads to behavior that quiets fear in the moment but strengthens it in the long run. Understanding this self-reinforcing system paves the way for effective intervention. In this workshop for parents and teachers of anxious children, participants will learn to identify where a child is in the worry loop, and the techniques needed break free.
