ITW # 22.21 - Friday 27th May 2022.
Headline image: Jodie Cross

Hi everyone,

This week’s message is from your CEO Karen in the absence of Commodore David who has headed off on an overseas trip for a few weeks.

CONSTITUTION UPDATE

As most Members would know, there has been a small but hard working group of Members, staff and even a non-member diligently committed to updating the RQYS Constitution and we wanted to express our appreciation to all the Members who have provided comments and feedback to assist us in this process. Your support and contribution has been extremely valuable and helped greatly on this journey. The Constitution not only needs to protect and preserve the purpose and objectives of the Squadron and uphold compliance with all legislation but also bring a focus on Social, Cultural and Workplace requirements.

Changes to the Constitution can only be voted on at a meeting of Members and, under instruction from the Commodore, a Special General Meeting has been called to be held on Tuesday 21st June 2022 and the Notice of Meeting has been posted and emailed to the respective members with the required 21 day notice period.

After Monday morning, for information purposes a copy of the Notice of Special General Meeting can be found on the Squadron’s website along with the proposed new Constitution. If you would like a hard copy or have one emailed, please contact the Squadron Administration office during business hours from Monday 30th May, provide your name and membership number, and a copy will be given to you.

Whilst we have also been working on the Squadron’s By-Laws and the Nominations Charter, these will not form part of the SGM discussions, but Members will be provided updates in due course, once the new Constitution is approved and adopted

AFLOAT and ASHORE

On a slightly different note, I am very pleased to be working with the Committee and assisting with plans and preparation for the upcoming Brisbane to Hamilton Island race in August; sadly, the lack of entries in the Brisbane to Keppel race means this event may be postponed for another 12 months.

Friday night (27th) we celebrated the achievements and participation of the Squadron’s Junior Sailors in all our Sailing programs and once again, congratulate them all for being part of this great sport in our enthusiastic Squadron!

The F&B department run by Ancora have also had a very busy month so far, but we were all disappointed with the last-minute cancellation of the annual Property Industry Regatta on 13th May due to bad weather. It is such a great event that not only F&B but many Club Members join in the fun on this normally great day.

With Winter months ahead, we are working on plans to give some of our Bistro, Bar and Dining areas a bit of a facelift which will include change to the operating hours. See below for more details on what that means to your dining plans.

Have a great week, enjoy this wonderful sunshine we are now experiencing and happy boating!

Karen

MARINA 2 ACCESS UPDATE

This coming Monday (30th May) morning, the ramp linking the bridge to the Marina 2 pontoons complex will be lifted for maintenance and repairs.

For the few hours the ramp is out of action, access to and from R, S, T, U, V, W and X rows and the 'BlueLoo' ablutions block, bins and carpark will be via a pair of RQYS RHIBs (or RQYS Shark Cats if inclement) - manned by our magnificent volunteers - to shuttle liveaboards, tradespeople and visitors across the inner harbour between R and P rows - click on the flyer image below for an enlargement or, to download the PDF flyer, CLICK HERE

Members and readers may have noticed The Jetty Specialists crane-barge working its way around various Marina 1 rows this week, re-sleeving piles and undertaking general heavy maintenance. The barge is spending the weekend parked off X row before its Monday morning relocation to the Marina 2 ramp.

We thank our Members, liveaboards, tradespeople and visitors in advance for your patience - and please be sure to smile and say a cheery 'thank-you' to our wonderful Volunteers for making this ferry shuttle service possible!

LIVEABOARD TIPS

Maybe shift intended 'laundry day' by 24hrs (to Sunday or Tuesday) to mitigate inconvenience and, if you were contemplating having spicy Indian or Mexican for dinner Sunday night, perhaps best think again. (Just sayin' ...)

*Kiosk/Coffee Shop menu
will include freshly made gourmet rolls & sandwiches, a Bar Snack menu and the usual pies, sausage rolls, etc

**Main Bistro Menu
Lunch & Dinner - Wednesday to Saturday only
Breakfast & Lunch - Sunday only, with Kiosk/Coffee Shop menu from 4pm

NEW 2022-23 MEMBER STICKERS

Stickers for Squadron Members' vehicles - 2022-23 'RQYS gold' - are now available for collection from Clubhouse Reception. Members should also collect the new 22-23 sticker strip for the reverse side of the membership card as well.

Just a reminder that, with changes to postal services, RQYS no longer mails out these items, and Members should call in to see our friendly Reception team on your next visit to our Club.

Removing last year's red Member stickers and applying the new RQYS gold one to a clearly visible spot on your vehicle's windscreen will greatly assist our Security and Grounds teams in actively monitoring access to and parking on Squadron grounds.

With such a great response by Members to our parking security campaign over recent months, we're confident in a swift uptake and application of the new year's items before 30th June 2022. Thank-you, everyone for your co-operation and please email RQYS Membership if you have any queries!

A MOUTHWATERING 'STRAGGLERS MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL' SPECIAL INCENTIVE!

The BIG NEWS this week is that we have a SECOND DRAW for Members yet to renew their full 2022-23 membership year (regardless of Category) who do so before 31st May.

We have a stunning Magnum (1.5 litre bottle) of Wildflower Rosé (2021) from WA's prized Margaret River to be chosen from the second Members' Draw at the end of this month!

See our friendly Reception team or email Membership to show your commitment to our Club, for another chance to win!

THE DRAW CONTINUES TO JACKPOT AND IS TICKING OVER FOUR FIGURE$!

Remember: you must be present, in the Bar or Bistro, if your Member # is called!

A MAN AND HIS BOAT

Mabel Persson remembers her husband and his boat: ‘Charlie bought the "Crest" (shortened from the name “Gold Crest”) in 1935 before we were married. She had been a cargo boat and was 'pretty rough' but he altered her for passenger cruises. He used to moor her at Kelly's at the mouth of Norman Creek. Charlie was not a 'money person' and was happy to take friends for river cruises or fishing parties down the Bay or outside. If he just got enough to cover the cost of food and fuel, he was happy.

‘"Crest" was a beautiful old boat - 39.5 foot in length with an 11 foot beam and very big side decks with big railings. She didn't roll and people could sleep on the decks in comfort. She had a very large engine - possibly a Wilson - which was run on kerosene. This made her very 'fumy'. Charlie eventually sold the "Crest" because it drew too much water for Bay use. It was renamed the "Hero" and was used as a fishing boat. It was later wrecked on the Tweed bar and her upturned hull was washed ashore on the beach there. People used to camp and light fires in it.’

DATE: 25/5/2022
WIND: S-SE / 12-18kn
TIDE: H@18.24
COURSE: ALPHA
NUMBER OF BOATS: 30

I’m sure the forecast of possible showers put a few skippers off, however the entire afternoon went without a drop and with plenty of breeze it was a fast race. Course Alpha was chosen again, not only to complete what we didn’t manage to finish last week, but to get everybody out and home just in case of the wet stuff. A very fast running reach from the start boat to the western cardinal behind Green Island ... READ MORE

CANAIPA CUP 2022: VOLUNTEERS' REPORT

Start Boat: Vic Frizzell; water taxi and buoy-laying: Campbell.
Skipper/ RO John Ward, crew, Phil Tooth and Ken Stuart.
Canipa catering: Kylie Fleming and Mark Dingley.

A very big "thank-you!" to the Volunteers that gave up their weekend to be available for the sailors and make sure they all got back to their boats after a couple of not-so-quiet drinks around the fire pit.

  • 1st place on PHS, and winner of the Canaipa Cup for 2022 is Gismo (WMSC)
  • 2nd - Geronimo
  • 3rd - Oscars Ride,

IRC results

  • 1st - Pagan II
  • 2nd - Fruit Salid 3
  • 3rd - Swallow

Congratulations to all the place-getters. Look forward to seeing you on the water 5th June for the first of the Winter Series!

The weekend was rainy and windy however the racing and fellowship was excellent. Entries were expected to number around 50 yachts, however at the 1105 start on Saturday, 25 yachts had signed on.

The start was clear with a 15 knot southeaster. Campbell was hooked onto Frizzell and we proceeded south to lay the BB mark south of Peel Island and the finish north of Macleay Island. With all the yachts finished we proceeded to Canipa and anchored in front of the jetty. The water taxi servite had all the sailors ashore for dinner by 1830. A great meal was prepared by Kylie and Mark. The water taxi returned all sailors to their yachts by 2200.

On Sunday the sailors were taxied to canipa for Kylie and Marks hot breakfast and back to their yachts by 915. There was a rush to get Frizzell to the start north of Macleay Island. A short delay with the start getting off at 1020. A clear reaching start in 20 knot winds was a great sight. The finish was completed near the Manly leads. All in all, a very successful weekend of yachting and fellowship!

Ahoy Cruisers

First, a huge congratulations goes out to Peter and Rosalie (Congo) who were recently announced recipients of the Cruising and Navigation Volunteer Award! All those that participated in the Cruise North last year would agree they did a fantastic effort as organisers. It was exceptionally planned and included Sail and Powerboats. Peter and Rosalie often help out around the group and the Club so it was well deserved recognition for the efforts!

As for sailing, what a frustrating period! For Sally and I, it’s not just the weather, Sally has a broken ankle so no sailing on Imoogi for a few more weeks. So that’s the current chairs and the deputy chairs out of action (same injuries) for the next few weeks. The good news is both patients are on the mend and can’t wait to get back out on the water.

Quentin and Barb have been working on next year’s Cruising Calendar. It is in the final stages of planning so we will be presenting it at the AGM with details of how to access it.

To assist with the completion of the Calendar, we are looking for volunteers to be cruise captains. If you are interested please let me or the Deputy Chairs know so we can discuss your ideas and add you to the calendar.

C = Combined   |   S = Sail   |   P = Power

For all enquiries not individually linked in the text below, or in relevant event graphics in this edition of ITW, please contact the respective Group Chairs via the details below.

S • Sail Cruising AGM and Tassie Circumnavigation Cruise presentation - Friday 10th June  We would like as many of our Sail Cruising Group to attend. There will be a year in review presentation and we will see in the new Committee. We need to start at 7.30pm in the auditorium as there is plenty to get through and I’m sure many of you will want to ask questions. ALL are welcome to attend but please let Dean and Sally know if you are coming so we can ensure we have enough tables booked for dinner.

C • "Night Raid" Cruise - Saturday 11th / Sunday 12th June  If you want to test your night navigation skills (both Power and Sail), this event will start in Manly at dusk and tracks across to Myora to anchor or raft up overnight. A pre-departure briefing is planned at 4.00pm in the squadron Auditorium for an around 5.00pm departure. Rest assured the "Raid" will only occur if the weather is reasonable. Look out for the Night Raid flyer in a forthcoming ITW. Glen Battershill is the organiser and will provide some great tips about night sailing so if you are interested in more details, please send him an email  For those that would prefer not to sail at night, we may put on a simple Sundowners cruise.

C • Cruising and Navigation Presentation Night - Friday 24th June
Our Cruising calendar has been impacted by weather and COVID, but we still have managed to have some great events and fun times to remember! The Awards night is an opportunity to dress up and celebrate these events and competitions. This is the annual Black Tie event and it’s always a fun night. There are several awards for the sail cruising group for members that have provided fantastic assistance to the group throughout the previous year. We also have the RQYS Long-Distance Sail Cruiser Half and Full Globe Awards to sail cruisers who have sailed the equivalent distance of Half or Whole way around the globe equating to 10,800 nm (half globe award) or 21,600 nm (full globe award). There a some conditions so if you believe you have qualified, please make contact with me so we can discuss.

C • Combined Christmas in July at Canaipa
- 2nd / 3rd July 2022
Pencil this one in your calendar. This has been a bit stop-start over the last couple of years due to COVID, however it's always well attended and this year's event should be big and a great opportunity to catch up and celebrate after all the restrictions! Currently in planning mode, mark the calendar for our traditional weekend of eating, imbibing, socialising and robbing each other of midwinter Xmas gifts. It is always a fun weekend so stay tune for more information coming down the track!

P • Rescheduled Myora Cup (Navigation) - Saturday 23rd / Sunday 24th July  After a weather/flood cancellation of the prior dates and difficulties with other clashing squadron events, rather than completely cancel the event from the 2022 Calendar, we have re-scheduled this weekend date to run the Squadron's oldest Navigation Cup event. It is tentative at this stage as we do need a minimum number of 15 entries. If you are considering or are planning to enter the event, please reply/advise Pip by email.

C • Cruise North in company, 2022  We have only about eight boats on the list indicating they intend to head north for Winter. There are various plans for departure dates ranging from early June through to end of August. If you want to be added to the list so you can communicate with others, let the respective Chairs know.

THE MOOLOOBAR HEADLINES AGAIN WITH N228(T) AND THE MIDWEEK SURVEY

There has been no reported changes to, nor any new survey of, the river bar from MSQ and the interim channel markers in last week's N228(T) remain current. ITW readers on social media may find frequent, first-hand updates and videos on the Mooloolaba Coast Guard QF6's Facebook page.

Two reference marks for guidance only have been promulgated to facilitate a possible alternative route of navigation to and from the entrance channel. The reference marks can be portrayed on automatic identification system (AIS) and electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS).

Reference mark 1 (BNE MRB REF 1) positioned at 26° 40.798' S 153° 7.798' E

Reference mark 2 (BNE MRB REF 2) positioned at 26° 40.820' S 153° 7.883' E.

In passing, N234(T) reports that a light beacon in the Fison Channel, Cleveland - Q.Bu (27° 31'.94 S 153° 17'.20 E) - is unlit.

MSQ's NOTAMs page remains otherwise relatively quiet again this week so that's the round-up for this week but always remember: the onus is on skippers to visit the MSQ webpage and inform themselves of relevant issues. Remember, too, you can also sign up to the Commonwealth Government's free email advisories about changes affecting your choice of local charts and publications, both paper and electronic.

Remember that you can check recent ITW editions on the RQYS website's Publications page as many of the MSQ NOTAMS reported may remain current.
