ITW # 22.22 - Friday 3rd June 2022.
Headline image: South Passage sunrise from Manly Ridge; Jodie Cross

Hi Members,

Just when I thought I was one of the lucky ones who had escaped the COVID bug, last Saturday I woke up with a sore throat and, at hubby David’s insistence, whipped out the RAT and hey presto ... I had it! I still feel I have been one of the lucky ones as, after Day 2, I didn’t feel too bad ... until I then passed it to my husband who I don’t think is very happy with me, as he has ended up in hospital.

So, with everyone looking after their own health and wellbeing, the annual flu virus is now also spreading its wings and, with this recent shock of cold weather, we encourage everyone eligible who hasn't already done so to get the free government flu shot before the end of June.

If you are not well, please stay home so that we can maintain a healthy workplace for our Members, guests and staff.

As mentioned in ITW last week, the Coffee Shop, Bar / Bistro dining hours will be changing for the winter months (June-August), but we also have a number of new 'wintry' menu items being added, including slow-roasted Lamb Shanks, Scallop Pie and Seafood Chowder, to mention just a few.

The Coffee Shop will also be offering a range of freshly-made gourmet rolls on a daily basis, but please note that the full bistro menu will not be available on Mondays and Tuesdays for the next couple of months, having been replaced with a selection of popular lighter meal options.

Members will receive 10% discount off the advertised menu prices and, unless specified otherwise, no further discounts will be available during this period. Plans are still being worked on to improve the décor, comfort and warmth of the Bistro dining area and I hope to have more information on that soon!

Looking ahead to a renewed calendar of events, the Squadron plays host tonight to the Launch of the annual “Cocktails for a Cause” fundraising activities for 2022, RQYS kicking things off with a $5,000 donation to support our local community, the cheque to be presented by Vice-Commodore John Warlow to local State Member Joan Pease MP.

Congratulations also to the skipper and crew of 'North Light' on winning the RQYS Past Commodores' Cup for 2022 last weekend (see report below), Still on a celebratory note, kudos to 'Lisa Rose' and crew - Mathew Belcher OAM, Martin Hill, Julian Plante and Sean O’Rourke - for taking out the recent Etchells Gold Coast and Australasian Championships for 2022! Read more on that HERE

Have a great week everyone - stay safe, warm and look after each other!

CONGRATULATIONS TO JOE ANDON, MEMBER #15827, ON BEING DRAWN THE WINNER OF THE "STRAGGLERS' MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL INCENTIVE" ON 31st MAY!

On your next visit to the Squadron, please present your membership card at Reception to arrange collection of your winner's Magnum!

And a reminder for Members who are still yet to renew for the 2022-23 year that we will be endeavouring to make contact with you in the coming week to arrange your subscription renewal payments before gate access to the Squadron grounds is deactivated on your cards from Monday 13th June. Please call Reception (3396 8666 / option #1) or EMAIL MEMBERSHIP today!

NEW 2022-23 MEMBER STICKERS

Stickers for Squadron Members' vehicles - 2022-23 'RQYS gold' - are now available for collection from Clubhouse Reception. Members should also collect the new 22-23 sticker strip for the reverse side of the membership card as well.

Just a reminder that, with changes to postal services, RQYS no longer mails out these items, and Members should call in to see our friendly Reception team on your next visit to our Club.

Removing last year's red Member stickers and applying the new RQYS gold one to a clearly visible spot on your vehicle's windscreen will greatly assist our Security and Grounds teams in actively monitoring access to and parking on Squadron grounds.

For current 2022-23 Financial Members who find a friendly note on their windscreen, this is probably because your vehicle is still displaying a previous year's superseded colour sticker, and a quick visit to Reception should reduce paperwork!

NEW WINTERWEAR NOW IN STOCK!

Head into RQYS Reception to see the latest merchandise, perfect for the approaching cooler months. Please email our reception staff if you would like to order any item, or we can also post them to you (additional postage costs apply). NEW: the 2022 B2H polos are now in!

Just in from Gill:

  • Levanto Jackets are $199
  • The Long Sleeves are $79
  • Navy Fleece Jacket for $140
  • 1 Race Softshell Jacket for $259
  • and 1 Coastal Jacket for $587.95

THE DRAW CONTINUES TO JACKPOT AND IS NOW INTO FOUR FIGURE$!

Remember: you must be present, in the Bar or Bistro, if your Member # is called!

DATE: 1/6/2022
WIND: W-WNW / 12-30kn
TIDE: L@1618h
COURSE: FOXTROT REVERSE
NUMBER OF BOATS: 19

The possibility of a gusty wind comes not only with the consumption of certain foods but is also all but guaranteed when it comes from the west. The BoM dropped its Strong Wind Warning at 10am and all of the information available suggested the afternoon would be challenging but okay. The course chosen should have been reaching and running for 90% of its distance with only a small beat ... READ MORE

Fellow Members: apologies for this week's significantly delayed ITW, its belated dispatch due to both COVID impacts and a number of other operational factors outside my control. M

The Regatta Hotel, ca 1940

A BRISBANE TRADIE REMEMBERS WWII

Graham Mackey was an apprentice plumber learning his trade in Brisbane during WWII. He shares a memory: ‘We were engaged on work at the Regatta Hotel at Toowong which was also taken over by the armed services. Later on, the Regatta Hotel became the Leave Centre for American submariners coming back from sea duty. By then, Australia at home was heavily involved with the war, after Japan bombed the hell out of America’s base at Pearl Harbor. Within 2 or 3 months we had fleets of Yankee ships of all descriptions coming to Australian ports, but mainly to Brisbane as we were the closest to the activity up north. We also had planes coming into Brisbane’ s Eagle Farm Aerodrome, as it was then known. We also accepted American troops and workers known as 'Sea Bees' - these were mainly tradesmen from all walks of life and their job was to build camps in and around the Port of Brisbane, which was then classified as a frontline city. There sure was one hell of a lot of activity!’

PAST-COMMODORES' CUP 2022 REPORT

The weather turned out perfectly for our course around St Helena. The tidal currents challenged a few, with everyone returning to the Squadron for a leisurely lunch and presentations. Young blood is coming through with 'North Light' having three generations onboard for the event. Special thanks go to our own Mike (Spikey) Middleton for the amazing photos he took of the event and to Austin for driving the RHIB.  The 2022 winners are:

Traditional (with only four competitors in this event, prizes were awarded only to 1st and 2nd place)

  1. September Song, Steven O’ Brien
  2. Rous Explorer, Tim Green

GPS

  1. North Light, P/Cdre Denis Land
  2. Harbor-Nating, John Higgins
  3. Catchcry I, Grant Somerville

Hello everyone, and a big shout-out of thanks to our Marina 2 liveaboards especially, as well as to Members, their guests and visiting tradespeople, for everyone's co-operation in working around the bridge ramp repairs last Monday - everything went smoothly and the work was complete in just a few hours.

The Jetty Specialist crew and barge also undertook a range of maintenance tasks - including re-sleeving pontoon piles - around the RQYS facilities before departing after the worst of the westerly change came through. Some great shots by Jodie and Matt below - and special thanks to our ITW Editor for also creating the explanatory flyers and posters, and for 'letterbox-dropping' the liveaboards on Marina 2 in the days before!

A 'HEADZUP' NOTICE OF UPCOMING WORK ON MARINA 2 AMENITIES

Another contractor has been engaged to address the growing number of issues in the 'BlueLooBlock' - including flooring, walls, doors, locks, etc - but no start date nor estimated timeframe is yet available, so a date-claimer notice will be posted when we know.

It is likely that the BlueBlock laundry will be closed for one week and its other rooms will be closed in pairs for a week each to complete the necessary repairs and remediation.

Once firmer information is to hand, another communications campaign will be rolled out to Members and tradespeople - including posters in the 'BayViewBlock' facilities, as well as in the facilities in the former Marina Office and current Marina/Sailing Office blocks, advising users of the temporary increase in shared traffic.

Thanks again for everyone's co-operation and appreciation of the works in progress to further improve our Squadron's facilities for all.

Glen Scott
Marina Manager

C = Combined   |   S = Sail   |   P = Power

For all enquiries not individually linked in the text below, or in relevant event graphics in this edition of ITW, please contact the respective Group Chairs via the details below.

S • Sail Cruising AGM and Tassie Circumnavigation Cruise presentation - Friday 10th June  We would like as many of our Sail Cruising Group to attend. There will be a year in review presentation and we will see in the new Committee. We need to start at 7.30pm in the auditorium as there is plenty to get through and I’m sure many of you will want to ask questions. ALL are welcome to attend but please let Dean and Sally know if you are coming so we can ensure we have enough tables booked for dinner.

C • "Night Raid" Cruise - Saturday 11th / Sunday 12th June  If you want to test your night navigation skills (both Power and Sail), this event will start in Manly at dusk and tracks across to Myora to anchor or raft up overnight. A pre-departure briefing is planned at 4.00pm in the squadron Auditorium for an around 5.00pm departure. Rest assured the "Raid" will only occur if the weather is reasonable. Look out for the Night Raid flyer in a forthcoming ITW. Glen Battershill is the organiser and will provide some great tips about night sailing so if you are interested in more details, please send him an email  For those that would prefer not to sail at night, we may put on a simple Sundowners cruise.

C • Cruising and Navigation Presentation Night - Friday 24th June
Our Cruising calendar has been impacted by weather and COVID, but we still have managed to have some great events and fun times to remember! The Awards night is an opportunity to dress up and celebrate these events and competitions. This is the annual Black Tie event and it’s always a fun night. There are several awards for the sail cruising group for members that have provided fantastic assistance to the group throughout the previous year. We also have the RQYS Long-Distance Sail Cruiser Half and Full Globe Awards to sail cruisers who have sailed the equivalent distance of Half or Whole way around the globe equating to 10,800 nm (half globe award) or 21,600 nm (full globe award). There a some conditions so if you believe you have qualified, please make contact with me so we can discuss.

C • Combined Christmas in July at Canaipa
- 2nd / 3rd July
We are once again excited to bring this themed annual event back to its usual timeslot - a great opportunity to catch up and celebrate after all the COVID restrictions of the last few years! In keeping with the feedback received from the recent survey of cruising members, we are aiming to keep this function simple but fun. As you can appreciate, the complete traditional full roast dinner meal of the past is now more logistically difficult at Canaipa. Hence we are modifying the Saturday evening meal, and asking you to BYO salad or vegetables to share to accompany the roast meat (lamb/beef/chicken) that will be cooked for you. The fire pit will be in use and the marquee erected for our traditional “Bad Santa” game. On Sunday morning there will be a full Moreton Bay cooked breakfast before we all head home. This should be a great weekend of eating, imbibing, socialising and robbing each other of midwinter Xmas gifts. Please see the flyer for more information and please RSVP to your respective Cruise Captain on or before Wednesday 22nd June, so that we have a good understanding of numbers for catering purposes.

P • Rescheduled Myora Cup (Navigation) - Saturday 23rd / Sunday 24th July  After a weather/flood cancellation of the prior dates and difficulties with other clashing squadron events, rather than completely cancel the event from the 2022 Calendar, we have re-scheduled this weekend date to run the Squadron's oldest Navigation Cup event. It is tentative at this stage as we do need a minimum number of 15 entries. If you are considering or are planning to enter the event, please reply/advise Pip by email.

C • Cruise North in company  We now have about 22 boats (nine Yachtshare) on the list indicating they intend to head north for Winter. There are various plans for departure dates ranging from early June through to end of August, possibly September. If you want to be added to the list so you can communicate with others, let the respective Chairs know.

NOTAM 246(T) UPDATES THE MOOLOOLABAR STATUS:

A hydrographic survey of the Mooloolah River and its coastal bar on Thursday 02 June 2022, shows the entrance channel restored to the minimum design depth of 2.5m within the white sector of the Port entry light (PEL).

A remaining shoal patch extends from the end of the eastern breakwater in a westerly direction into the red sector of the entrance channel. The shoal has a least depth of approximately 2 metres at LAT within the red sector of the entrance channel. A shoal patch on the western edge of the entrance channel's green sector has a least depth of approximately 2.4 metres at LAT. There is an additional shoal patch to the west of the entrance channel with a least depth of 0.8m at LAT.

The two reference marks previously displayed on automatic identification system (AIS) Reference mark 1 (BNE MRB REF 1) , reference mark 2 (BNE MRB REF 2) have now been removed.

ITW readers on social media may find frequent, first-hand updates and videos on the Mooloolaba Coast Guard QF6's Facebook page.

BELOW: VIEW ESE ACROSS THE MESSY SHOALS OF THE BRIBIE BAR WITH NEW SPECIAL MARK INSTALLED BY MSQ

Image from QF4 Caloundra Coastguard Facebook post

Diligent readers of this ITW department will recall the amazing aerial images of the breakthrough and formal classification of the new 'Southern Bribie Island Bar' resulting from the wild weather back in February-March this year.

The situation continues to be dynamic as N245(T) updates: Due to the continual sand movement at the Bribie Island Bar significant shoaling has occurred in Pumicestone Passage. The shoal currently extends from Bribie Island to Golden Beach. A special mark buoy Fl Y2.5s has been established at the southern side of the shoal at 26° 49.330'S, 153° 07.769'E. There is significant shoaling across the remainder of the northern passage ... READ MORE

Working our way south through the Bay, dredging works are underway at Scarborough, scheduled through 21st July, per N242(T).

Two items 'closer to home' for RQYS ITW readers include the establishment of a new port beacon off Canaipa Point - N244 - Fl R 2.5s has been established in Canaipa Channel adjacent Canaipa Point in approximate position Latitude 27° 38.703' S, Longitude 153° 24.498' E to identify a shoal area adjacent the buoy mooring field.

... and NOTAM 240(T) advises of an IRREGULAR GREEN ISLAND NORTH CARDINAL .. which has possibly shat itself with some of the recent WAGS antics alluded to by Mr Boulton and which is 'visually defibrillating' in a manner not in accord with its published lighting.

That's the round-up from the MSQ's NOTAMs page this week but always remember: the onus is on skippers to visit the MSQ webpage and inform themselves of relevant issues. Remember, too, you can also sign up to the Commonwealth Government's free email advisories about changes affecting your choice of local charts and publications, both paper and electronic.

Remember also that you can check recent ITW editions on the RQYS website's Publications page as many of the MSQ NOTAMS reported may remain current.

FRENCH BEAUTY FOR SALE IN THE MED!

"SAEMIAS" (Queen of the Seas)
German Frers Mystic 60 (1989)

SAEMIAS is an acronym that carries the following universal values: Serenity, Amour, Experience, Marine, Instant, Abandonment and Simplicity. She is a stunning yacht with her German Frers looks and cutter headed ketch rig. She is one of those unique and exceptional sailboats that sailors and landlubbers dream about. With its cutting-edge classic line and majestic materials, it is an extraordinary machine and phenomenally fast-cruising sailboat that flatters your eyes as much as your imagination. She has already circumnavigated the globe and earned a 2nd place finish in the famous classic PANERAI Transatlantic race. She proved herself fast, dependable and very comfortable.

"My fiancée Tea and I have completed a 2-year, $320K full refit of this most beautiful 1989 Classic German Frers Mystic 60, now fully equipped and ready for a circumnavigation. The boat is as new. We have replaced, upgraded, serviced everything from engine to teak deck to watermaking to electricity and plumbing. Our plan was to make it our home and refit it for luxury charter this summer. We have just finished the full refit but unfortunately we will not be able to charter it and are compelled to sell Saemias for personal reasons.

"The asking price is 395K EUR. We believe that there may be one or several members at the The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron interested in acquiring such an exceptional vessel for either a circumnavigation or a place to stay in Europe. SAEMIAS is located on the island of Porquerolles in Southern France (a little paradise if you Google it) - far enough from Australia to make it really special!"
