He trained in neurosurgery at the Alfred Hospital and in Texas and London in the 1980's, before commencing specialist practice in 1986. GERRATY, R - CONFIRMED Headshot 15102013.jpg Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Position: Neurologist Professor Richard Gerraty is a neurologist with a sub-specialty interest in stroke and has had a long interest in the clinical aspects of spinal cord stroke. He did his MD on the perioperative stroke risk of carotid stenosis in cardiac and vascular surgery. He was the founding neurologist-director of the Acute Stroke Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and has also worked in stroke at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Alfred Hospital. He has been involved in pharma and investigator driven stroke trials in Melbourne. He was a member of the Leadership Group of the Department of Health’s Victorian Stroke Clinical Network, and was the Victorian chairman of the Australasian Stroke Unit Network. He is a neurologist in the Victorian Stroke Telemedicine (VST) program and a member of the VST Medical Working Group. He is a member of the Safer Care Victoria Stroke Clinical Network Reperfusion Monitoring Committee. He continues his own research in vestibular and stroke medicine at Epworth HealthCare where he is the Stroke Service Medical Coordinator. Patrick Chan.jpg Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Position: Neurosurgeon Mr Patrick Chan provides a wide range of neurosurgical services including both brain and spinal surgery in tumour, trauma and degenerative diseases. With additional training in Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship Program from Vancouver, Canada, Patrick has a special interest in managing complex spinal conditions at all levels (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). Patrick is also a member of the Neurosciences Committee, the Medical Advisory Committee at Epworth HealthCare and the Spinal Prostheses Clinical Advisory Group, Department of Health. Phal.Pramit.jpg Organisation: Epworth Medical Imaging Richmond Position: Clinical Director, Radiologist Assoc. Prof Phal is an experienced consultant radiologist, with subspecialty expertise in brain, ENT and spine imaging, and is the CEO of Epworth Medical Imaging. Assoc. Prof Phal graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1996 and completed specialisation in radiology at the Austin Hospital in 2003, followed by two years of fellowship training in musculoskeletal and neuroradiology at Oregon Health and Science University, USA. Prior to joining Epworth Medical Imaging, A/Prof Phal worked as a consultant radiologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital for more than nine years. Assoc. Prof Phal has a strong education and research focus. He has published more than 50 peer reviewed articles and is an examiner for the Royal Australian and NZ College of Radiologists (RANZCR). A/Prof Phal holds an academic appointment at the University of Melbourne, where he teaches and mentors medical students and the next generation of radiologists. Amanda Gilligan_1.jpg Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Position: Director of Neurosciences at Epworth Eastern Medical Centre and Director of the Epworth Neurosciences Clinical Institute A/Prof Amanda Gilligan is Director of Neurosciences at Epworth Eastern Medical Centre and Director of the Epworth Neurosciences Clinical Institute. She is a consultant neurologist with a specialist interest in stroke medicine and ongoing associations with teaching and research projects, particularly in stroke therapies. She graduated from Monash University in 1989 with honours and she completed her clinical training in neurology at the Royal Melbourne and the Austin Medical Centres. Her first research position was as the clinical coordinator for the first thrombolysis trial for acute stroke in Australia in 1992. With a NH&MRC postgraduate scholarship, she completed her PhD at the National Stroke Research Institute (now part of the Florey Institute) exploring the opportunities to treat acute stroke patients with multiple modalities, across Australia. She has subsequently been involved in many acute and secondary prevention trials for stroke patients. She has played a key role in the development of neurology services at Box Hill, in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Inspired by her sabbatical leave with Professor Pierre Amarenco at Bichat University, Paris, France in 2011, she has been energetically promoting new ways to provide the rapid access to urgent medical care for patients with stroke and TIA. She has ongoing affiliations with Monash and Melbourne Universities and Austin Health. In 2016, she was appointed as Director of the Neurosciences Unit at Epworth Eastern, and developed a specialised rapid TIA assessment service. In 2018, she was appointed as Epworth Neurosciences Clinical Institute Director, to provide leadership in clinical services, research and education across the 11 Epworth sites. thumb_IMG_0228_1024[1].jpg Organisation: Royal Melbourne Hospital Position: Neurosurgeon Mr Adamides studied medicine at the University of Nottingham, UK, and completed his basic surgical training in Edinburgh before undertaking his neurosurgical training in Australia. He became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2012 and has since been employed as a consultant neurosurgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He underwent sub-specialty training in cerebrovascular neurosurgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital as part of a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons approved fellowship. Dr Adamides was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree by Monash University in 2009 for his thesis investigating the role of multi-modality neuromonitoring in traumatic brain injury including the use of brain tissue oxygen monitoring and cerebral microdialysis. His current research interests include identification of biomarkers predictive of vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage. She completed her MD in 2012 in the area of motor neurone disease and rehabilitation and maintains a strong clinical and research interest in neuro-rehabilitation. The rehabilitation unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital provides a tertiary specialist rehabilitation service for patients with severe complex disabilities and has a national and international reputation as a leading service in the field of rehabilitation. He has participated in the introduction and development of many new techniques in Interventional Neuroradiology (INR) in Australia. GBsmall.jpg Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Position: Neurosurgeon Dr Brazenor was foundation chairman of the Epworth Neurosciences Clinical Institute from 2008-2016 and was Adjunct Professor during that period. He was instrumental in introducing spinal navigation technology to Epworth Hospital during his period of tenure, as well as introducing and establishing quarterly audits in neurosciences. He electively ceased to operate at the stroke of midnight 31/12/2015, now consults five days per week, and is enjoying a better quality of life than he has ever experienced since entering year 9 in high school. Dally.Michael.Dr.JPG Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Position: Radiation Oncologist Dr Michael Dally is Australia's leading stereotactic radiation oncologist with a sub-speciality interest in Neuro-Oncology and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. He was the first in Victoria to develop stereotactic irradiation at the Alfred Hospital, affiliated with Monash University in 1996. He now works with Icon Cancer Centre at Epworth HealthCare in Richmond, Victoria, with the latest technology and members of his original stereotactic team. Many conditions other than cancer may be treated with Stereotactic Radiosurgery. In addition to an interest in clinical trials and Quality of Life, he has taught stereotactic radiosurgery for benign, malignant and functional CNS conditions through the BrainlabAG teaching academy in Australia, Asia and Europe. He has been an invited guest speaker in China, Korea, Malaysia and India as well as for the Neurosurgery Society of Australia. He has been part of the neurosurgical trainee (SET) faculty on a number of occasions. He is the principle investigator for SHRINC a phase II study of Stereotactic Hypo fractionated Stereotactic Radiosurgery Including Neurological and Cognitive assessment and is currently investigating Radiosurgery for Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor. He has since treated more than 3000 patients and is now the Head of Epworth's Stereotactic department.
John McMahon 2013.JPG Position: Neurosurgeon Mr John McMahon completed advanced training in neurosurgery and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2000. He completed post graduate training in Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at the University of Texas, South Western Medical Centre, Dallas, USA in 2001. He has a particular expertise in the surgical management of cerebrovascular pathology including intracranial aneurysms, AVM’s, cavernomas and is part of a multidisciplinary approach for the management of AVM’s. Bernie completed his PhD in stroke medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1999 while working at the Western Hospital. Bernie worked at Royal Melbourne Hospital as a neurologist and in the Stroke Service from 1999 until 2004. He has worked at Epworth HealthCare since 2000 and was the Director of the Stroke Service from 2001 until 2010. |
