Position: Clinical Lead for Sexual Health

Dr Paula Briggs trained in Glasgow and worked as a GP in Liverpool from 1993. She is passionate about Women’s Health and established a very successful sexual health clinic based in her general practice many years ago. This has moved to a community setting (May Logan Centre, Bootle). She was appointed a Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Health in 2014, and is the Clinical Lead for Sexual Health for Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust.This is an integrated service which includes the use of ultrasound and hysteroscopy, an abortion service, genito-urinary medicine, menopause and contraceptive services.
Paula has been actively involved in the training of GPs in the Mersey Region and beyond and is now Deanery Advisor for the Mersey Region. She is also a “guardian” for the FSRH training in Special skills in ultrasound.

She has an interest in research, including the conservative treatment of fibroids, for which she was awarded the Poster prize at the World Congress of Human Reproduction (2013), she has coedited 2 books on Contraception and the Menopause (Cambridge university Press) and co-wrote an undergraduate textbook of O & G (Springer).
In her private life she has four children, and runs half-marathons.

Position: Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Stephen Cole is a Visiting Medical Officer, Epworth Freemasons, and Consultant in Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine at The Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, where he is Head of the Multiple Pregnancy Clinic.  He is also a founding member of the Victorian Fetal Therapy Service, and Chair of the Australian NAIT Registry.

Dr Cole’s interests are fetal surgery, management of complex multiple pregnancy and iso-immunisation disorders in pregnancy.

Position: Urogynaecologist and Obstetrician

Dr Alison de Souza graduated with honours from Monash University and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the Mercy Hospital for Women in Victoria.  Post fellowship training in Urogynaecology has led to expertise in the management of bladder and bowel dysfunction including incontinence, prolapse and sexual dysfunction. Alison is a Certified Urogynaecologist and is experienced in advanced pelvic floor reconstruction.  She is also certified Colposcopist, managing all aspects of cervical dysplasia. Alison treats many women with general gynaecology, bleeding and menopausal concerns. She has experience managing perineal trauma and works in the Perineal clinic at The Mercy Hospital for Women treating women with third and fourth degree tears.

Alison is actively involved in teaching and research with several scientific publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

Dr Samantha Hargreaves is an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Epworth Freemasons, and appointment with the Royal Women’s Hospital Endometriosis & Pelvic Pain Clinic.  Her clinical interests are minimal invasive surgery, colposcopy & menstrual disorders.

Position: Group Chief Executive

Dr Lachlan Henderson is a medical practitioner who has 30 years’ experience in the health industry, joining Epworth in February 2017.

Lachlan’s previous executive roles include CEO St John of God (SJG) Subiaco Hospital, Executive Director of SJG Perth Northern Region, CEO SJG Pathology and the Group Director Medical Services and Strategy, SJG. Prior to taking on these roles, he was a General Practitioner for more than a decade. Critical to his success has been his focus on quality patient care and staff satisfaction while enhancing the business and financial outcomes for the organisation.

In his career, Lachlan has held a variety of University and Board appointments. He is currently Vice President of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA) and Chair of Cricket Australia.

Position: Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Clinical Institute

Professor Gab Kovacs is a Reproductive Gynaecologist retired from clinical work. His current appointments include Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Clinical Institute, Epworth HealthCare, and Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Monash University. Gab is also Chairman of the Board of Day Hospitals Australia. He is Past President of Family Planning Australia and The Fertility Society of Australia, Past Chair of IVF Director’s Group, and Past Councillor RANZCOG.

Position: Gynaecologist & Infertility Specialist

Dr Rachael Knight studied medicine at the University of Tasmania before training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Royal Women’s Hospital and Mercy Hospital for Women.  She also undertook further study for a Doctorate of Medicine at Melbourne University and three years of specialty training in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. 
 She furthered her expertise in infertility surgery and IVF with two years working in Bristol in the United Kingdom. 

Rachael is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Infertility Specialist and currently holds one of the positions of Clinical Director of Melbourne IVF at East Melbourne. She runs a fertility clinic at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Parkville for HIV discordant couples and is actively involved in clinical research.

Dr Lee is Director of the Women's and Children's Clinical Institute, Epworth HealthCare and Chair of Obstetrics, Epworth Freemasons.

Her interests are high risk obstetrics, laparoscopic surgery, general gynaecology including colposcopy and menstrual disorders, menopause.

Position: Director, Department of Endosurgery

Peter Maher has been a gynaecologist for 42 years.

He was appointed as visiting specialist and second assistant to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology on his return from  a senior registrar’s position in the UK in 1979.He worked as a general O&G until he became involved with MIS in 1990.Following a visit to Dr.Harry Reich in the USA in 1990 he returned to Australia and performed the first laparoscopic assisted hysterectomy in 1991 and co-published this in the Med. J. Australia. Since that time he established the Endosurgery Unit at Mercy Hospital for Women in 1993 and soon after a Fellowship program within the Unit under the auspices of the University. He was on the Founding Board of AGES and became its second President. He was also a Past Board Member of the AAGL ,president of ISGE and an honorary Life Member of the BSGE.

He has taught the principles of endoscopic surgery around the world for more than28 years.

He has co-authored books, chapters in textbooks and published widely on this topic in peer-reviewed journals.

He continues his role as head of Unit at Mercy Hospitaland is a Clinical Professor at Melbourne University.

Position: Director of Haematology

Dr Ellen Maxwell has been Director of Haematology at Melbourne Pathology, part of the Sonic Healthcare group, since 2003 and Medical Director since 2009. She is a Melbourne University graduate gaining fellowships of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 1997 and has previously held public hospital and private pathology appointments. Her areas of interest include morphological diagnosis, congenital and acquired bleeding disorders, thrombosis and transfusion medicine and she is actively involved in education of medical students, advanced trainees in haematology, medical scientists, hospital nursing and medical staff and GPs. Ellen is the current chair of the National Blood Transfusion Committee, immediate past chair of the Victorian Blood User Group and Clinical Practice Improvement Committee for ANZSBT, a member of the Victorian Haemovigilance Committee (STIR), and the ARCBS Clinical Advisory Committee.

Professor Robert J Norman AO, BSc (Hons), MBChB(Hons), MD, FRANZCOG, FRCPA, FRCPath, FRCOG, CREI, FAHMS is Professor of Reproductive and Periconceptual Medicine, Robinson Research Institute, The University of Adelaide, and Medical Director and sub specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility Fertility SA.  He is also visiting medical specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility Royal Adelaide Hospital, and Co-Director NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Position: Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Alon Talmor is a UK trained Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and a UK Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists qualified Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery.

Having completed his medical school studies and having obtained a Molecular Biology PhD in the field of male factor infertility, a career in fertility was mapped out early for Alon.

On completion of his training, Alon was appointed as a consultant at Monash Health and a Senior Lecturer at Monash University.

Alon is heavily involved in research. He teaches and examines for the Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Reproductive Medicine degrees. He supervises and examines BMedSci research projects and is regularly invited to speak at overseas meetings. He is a training programme supervisor for the Monash specialist training program and is a member of the RANZCOG Victorian Regional Committee, and the Epworth HealthCare O&G Clinical Institute Executive.

Position: Clinical Services Director - Women's and Children's Services

Associate Professor Glyn Teale is the Clinical Services Director of Women’s and Children’s Services at Western Health, Sunshine Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor, University of Melbourne. He is an obstetrician and gynaecologist with research interests the management of obesity in pregnancy and reducing stillbirths. He is a member of the Neonatal Death subcommittee of The Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity and the Obstetric Peer for the Regional Maternal and Perinatal Mortality and Morbidity Committee, Grampian Region.

Position: Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgeon

Dr Jill Tomlinson is a Melbourne plastic, reconstructive and hand surgeon who practices in Richmond and has a longstanding interest in women's health. She is a Federal Councillor of the Australian Medical Association, Specialty Editor for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery and a Partner Investigator in the Monash University Research Project Elucidating the increasing demand for genital cosmetic surgery among girls and women in Australia.

Position: Clinical Director & IVF Specialist

Associate Professor Jim Tsaltas is the Head of Gynaecological Endoscopy and Endometriosis Surgery at Monash Health.  He is past president of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Society (AGES).  He is currently chairman of the AGES Education Subcommittee.  He has long advocated for minimally invasive surgery to be the standard treatment for gynaecological conditions.  He is a senior consultant at the Epworth Freemasons and one of the clinical directors at Melbourne IVF.

Jim has published and presented widely in the field of advanced gynaecological endoscopy in Australia and worldwide.
