His main career interests developed working in reproductive medicine under the guidance of Professor Robert Winston at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, and in minimal access gynaecological surgery under the supervision of Alan Gordon in Hull. During this training period, he was one of the first to introduce transvaginal ultrasound and the use of analogue IVF stimulation regimens in the UK, which radically changed iVF practice. He has been actively involved in reproductive medicine both nationally and internationally over the last 25 years. He acted as a clinical inspector for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) from 1995 to 2002. He was the Gynaecologist on the Guideline Development Committee that prepared the original NICE Guidelines on the management and assessment of Fertility in 2004. He has served in numerous roles for over 17 years on the committee of the British Fertility Society, culminating as Chair of the Society from 2009-2012. He represented the UK on the International Federation of Fertility Societies Executive and Scientific Committees for 6 years, and more recently as a member of the European Assisted Conception Consortium, and the International Advisory Board of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. He has worked closely with the Department of Health, and provided the principle clinical lead for the 18 week Care Pathway for Fertility that eliminated long waiting times for IVF treatments in the UK, and the Map of Medicine for Fertility, which provides web based national guidance for all medical practitioners on investigating and managing fertility.

He has continued to work with NICE as a member of the NICE Evidence Review Advisory Committee for Fertility, and recently was appointed by the Department of Health as the Clinical Member of the HFEA. He is also on the Editorial Board of Human Fertility.

Mr Rutherford has played an important role in general education of the next generation of gynaecologists from 2004 to 2010 as a member, and later chair, of the MRCOG Part II examination committee, and a member of the RCOG Education and Assessment Committee. He has also played an important role as a patient advocate, as an active member of the National Infertility Awareness Committee from 2005 to 2013.

Mr Rutherford has played a key role in the development of new clinical strategies in reproductive medicine and has published over 94 peer reviewed articles and papers, including numerous book chapters. He has held £2.5 million of grants for academic research since his appointment in Leeds. Highlights include his team winning the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology prize for Junior Researcher of the year, and two first prizes with the American Society of Reproductive Medicine in 1996 and 1998 for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Knowledge for the members of the ASRM.
