Life-threatening paediatric emergencies are relatively rare, but when they occur, healthcare providers must quickly recognise and treat a deteriorating patient. In rural areas, GPs often manage these emergencies, needing a solid grasp of algorithmic approaches and resuscitation resources. With limited specialist access, rural GPs must confidently handle both urgent and routine paediatric cases.

Meet your presenters

The lead facilitator for this workshop is Dr Kate Bassett. Kate is a paediatric emergency specialist at The Prince Charles Hospital, also practicing adult emergency medicine at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. She is a convenor of the Queensland Paediatric Fellowship Program and teaches in Health Workforce Queensland’s emergency and trauma courses.

Originally a physiotherapist, Kate transitioned to medicine and and has taken a less than conventional path through her training years. She started off at a paediatric hospital but changed to emergency medicine to fit better around her family. She has ended up doing paediatric emergency which suits her well. She is passionate about doctor education, from medical school through to consultant training. Kate also supports young doctors with families, helping them navigate non-traditional pathways in medicine.

1. Demonstrate safe and effective basic paediatric airway management – including ability to intubate if required in an emergency.
2. Demonstrate neonatal resuscitation and paediatric basic life support using Australasian Resuscitation Council guidelines.
3. Perform intraosseous needle insertion safely and effectively.
4. Discuss the initial presentation of the critically ill child using an ABCD approach.
5. Identify paediatric wheeze emergency presentations.
6. Explain paediatric seizure emergency presentation
7. Discuss paediatric DKA emergency presentation
8. Discuss paediatric fever emergency presentations
9. Discuss assessment and management of acute and chronic abdominal pain in children - including indications for ED and paediatric outpatient referral
10. Identify head and cspine injuries
11. Discuss paediatric laceration emergency presentations
12. Discuss common paediatric fracture emergency presentations
13. Identify common neonate emergency presentation including crying baby, feeding and jaundice
